Smart Messages promotes itself as a great app for sending basic SMS messages, more featured MMS messages, and then the internet-based RCS messages. However, it does NOT send RCS messages. Instead, what it offers is RCS-like functionality only if you convince every other person you text with to also use Smart Messages.
That means if you want to have return receipts and ‘they are typing’ dots and the other standard RCS features, you’d have to get every other person you text with to download and install Smart Messages.
That just isn’t going to happen in my world.
So as much as I really would like an RCS alternative to Google Messages, it doesn’t look like Smart Messages is going to be that option.
