I’ve been using Samsung cellphones for years and years. They always came preloaded with the Samsung RCS SMS text app on them. It never even occurred to me that there were other apps I could use. I imagined, if I tried to do something else, I’d lose my entire current set of texts and contacts.
Then Samsung began a relentless campaign of popping up messages asking me to please switch over to the Google text messaging app instead. I would get multiple of these pop-ups every day. So the only reason I even began to investigate switching is because Samsung pushed me to.
The main screen for the Samsung app simply shows you the latest texts with the most recent on top. You click on one to see the full conversation with that person. And yes the top half is all gray. The third item down is a multi-person chat showing multiple faces in the circle.

If you click on a conversation you see just that conversation. Here’s one with a friend of mine.

See how the app tells me she has read my messages? That is a setting on HER side she makes, to allow me to know if she reads things. You as a phone owner have the ability to set your phone to let others know you’ve read a text, or to set your phone so it does NOT send that read receipt.
And that being said, some apps just don’t tell you a status at all. This Samsung app nicely told me the status and I came to rely on it. But when I moved over to other text apps, I really missed that feature. So I knew to look for it when making my decision.
So, to summarize, I loved the Samsung texting app. It worked reliably and gave me exactly the information I needed. The only reason I stopped using it was that Samsung actively pushed me, daily, to move over to the Google texting app.
