You might think that phone text messages just ‘work’. You get a phone, it comes with an app, and you start sending texts to people. But you can actually choose from a variety of apps to send those text messages. You can switch between them. The texts themselves are stored in a common database on your phone that any app can show you. That way you can choose the look and feel that best suits you.
I’ve had Samsung phones for many, many years, so my phone came with the Samsung text app. I just thought if it as the ‘normal’ text app. It’s only when Samsung began to phase this app out, and I started getting regular harassing pop-ups to switch over to the Google text app version, that I delved down this rabbit hole.
So the basic initial thing to understand with texting from a phone is that you can use pretty much ANY texting app you want, that’s designed for SMS (short message service) texting. As a historical note, in the original days, SMS texts could only be 160 characters, which led to people using all sorts of abbreviations in their texts. Nowadays the software is smart enough to string together a series of SMS messages to create a longer message.
You could use a Samsung app, decide on Friday to switch over to Google’s app, and then decide on Monday to go back to the Samsung app.
So with that all being said, let’s take a look at some of the texting apps I’ve used.
